Call of the Land is a five day-a-week, 9-minute agricultural radio program produced by Alberta Agriculture. This information and extension program is aired on 25 Alberta radio stations. For over 50 years Call of the Land has broadcast during the noon hour to a province wide network of stations. It now reaches a daily audience of over 110,000. Aimed at rural Albertans, stories keep the agricultural community current on the latest agricultural technologies, research findings, production methods and marketing trends, as well as government programs and policies. Call of the Land Calendar for February 2, 2012
Alberta Agriculture has been hosting a number of information sessions on Changes to the Barley and Wheat Marketing System. Topics covered include barley and wheat markets, pricing in the new system, delivery and grading, transportation and logistics, research and development, and an on-farm perspective. Only one meeting remains - February 6 in Vegreville. It runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. and lunch will be provided. To register, call the Ag-Info Centre at 1-800-387-6030. The Canadian Farm Business Management Council is holding a number of agriwebinars this winter. On February 6, Maria Labrecque Duchesneau discusses self-management skills, Kevin Spafford discusses succession planning on February 13, and Colette Lebel looks at business structures on the February 27 webinar. There are a number of Working Well workshops being held across the province. Remaining February workshops are as follows: February 8 in Thorhild, the 15th in Gunn, the 16th in Grovedale, the 22 in Ponoka and February 27 in Red Deer. If you would like to get the facts about producing safe honey, a series of workshops are being held across the province. The workshops are intended to inform beekeepers about the safe use of agricultural chemicals. Remaining workshops are as follows: the 16th in Peace River, February 22 in Edmonton, the 28th in St. Paul, and March 1 in Westlock. The future Ag Business Builders, the Alberta chapter of the Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum, is hosting the annual young agribusiness professionals and young farmers conference Rock the Farm. It’s taking place February 4 in Edmonton. All the speakers are young people who have been successful in the agriculture industry. Topics range from precision ag technology to agribusiness finance to direct marketing strategies and succession planning. Go to www.fabb.ca to register or for more information.

The Forage Agronomy Update is being held February 8 and 9 in Nisku. Some of the topics to be covered include selecting for a feed efficient cow herd, the role of annual forage in Alberta feeding systems, breeding triticale, sod seeding of annual crops in strips for green feed, and the effects of clipping treatments on grass plants. Farm Credit Canada is holding a number of free workshops. The Estate Planning Workshop goes Tuesday, February 14 at the Eaglesham Community Hall. The Succession Planning Workshop is Thursday February16 at the George Dawson Inn in Dawson Creek, and Hiring and Keeping Employees goes Thursday, March 15 at the Evergreen Park in Grande Prairie.
